Buying a Shaker is a seemingly simple task. However, such a huge assortment of Shakers available from a multitude of manufacturers, confusion can set in quickly. There are many factors to consider such as performance, functions, capacity, colors and appearance. The Shaker you choose will be based on your needs, wants and taste preferences and all of these go far beyond just ice crushing ability.

When you're ready to start your search, ask yourself these questions. What will I be mainly using it for? How often will I use it? How much jar capacity do I need? Where will I store it? What fashion style suits my liking? Once you've answered these questions, you will have a much better idea of what you're after in a Shaker and be able to narrow the field of possibilities.
The two major styles of Shakers are counter top and hand held or immersion. Counter top Shakers offer more power, greater jar capacity and overall versatility but they also take up more space in use and in storage. Hand held Shakers are more convenient (you can blend in a pot or bowl) and take up far less space but offer much less power. You may decide that it's beneficial for you to own both, whatever your decision, there are many options in both styles.
Variable speeds are an option to be considered. Some Shakers such as professional bar Shakers have only one or two speeds while others designed for home use have up to sixteen speeds. Again ask yourself what the Shaker's main use will be. The power of a Shaker really depends on its motor's wattage. The higher the wattage, the greater the power. If you're looing for a high power unit then look for one with a minimum of 800 watts. Many of the speeds of a multi speed unit aren't necessary. What is necessary is for the Shaker to have high quality hardened stainless steel blades aside from the motor, the blades on a Shaker is the most critical component to its overall performance.
The jar is the next part to be considered. Jars come in various sizes and shapes and can be made of stainless steel, glass or polycarbonate (high impact plastic). Your preference will determine which type you'll need but all jars should have a cover that provides a leak proof seal and a comfortable handle making an easy pour. The jar should also be dishwasher safe and have a blade drive system that is leak proof. The jar should be very stable when seated on the motor base yet easily removed. It's pour spout should be designed for an even steady flow when dispensing so that your blended contents end up where you want them.
Design, style and appearance including color are important factors in your decision. Shakers come in a wide variety of styles such as retro, euro and contemporary. For some people performance factors outweigh appearance and others vice-versa. Personal preference will prevail for each person. The truth is that there are so many models to choose from, you'll be able to get darn close to if not exactly what you want and need.
